Using Slack with SoterAI

Connect your Slack workspace to SoterAI and search messages, retrieve information from channels, and bring your team's conversations into your safety workflows.

What SoterAI can access

Once connected, SoterAI has read-only access to:

  • Messages in public channels your account has access to
  • Messages in private channels you are a member of
  • Direct messages and group DMs
  • Message metadata: sender, timestamp, channel
  • Shared files and links posted in messages

Read-only access: SoterAI can read your Slack messages, but cannot send, post, edit, or delete any messages.

What SoterAI cannot do

  • Cannot send, post, edit, or delete messages
  • Cannot create, archive, or manage channels
  • Cannot access channels or DMs you are not a member of
  • Cannot manage Slack workspace settings or permissions

How to connect Slack

  1. In the SoterAI chat bar, click the puzzle piece icon
  2. In the Connectors panel, find Slack and click Connect
  3. An authorisation link will appear — click it
  4. Sign in to your Slack workspace in the browser window that opens
  5. Grant SoterAI read access when prompted
  6. Return to SoterAI — Slack now shows as Connected

Your connection is persistent — you won't need to reconnect each session. If your connection expires, SoterAI will prompt you to reconnect.

What you can ask SoterAI

Once connected, just ask naturally in any chat or workflow:

Finding information

  • "Search Slack for any recent messages about the site incident last week"
  • "What was discussed in the #safety channel this week?"
  • "Find messages from the team about the contractor visit on Monday"

Reading and summarising

  • "Summarise the last 20 messages in the #hazard-reports channel"
  • "What decisions were made in the #hse-team channel today?"
  • "What did the team say about the permit to work process in Slack?"

Using in workflows

  • "Pull the incident details from the #incidents Slack channel and create a record"
  • "Use the discussion from the safety briefing channel to generate action items"

Use cases

Safety incident awareness

Ask SoterAI to search your Slack workspace for recent messages about a specific incident or hazard, giving you a consolidated view of what's been reported and discussed across channels.

Team communication review

Before a safety meeting, ask SoterAI to summarise recent activity in your safety channels — surfacing open questions, decisions made, and outstanding actions without reading through every message manually.

Knowledge retrieval

When a procedure or decision was communicated via Slack rather than documented formally, ask SoterAI to find the relevant message thread so you can reference it accurately.

Troubleshooting

My Slack connection expired

Ask SoterAI "Reconnect to Slack" and follow the authorisation link it provides.

SoterAI can't find a message I know exists

Confirm you are a member of the channel where the message was posted. SoterAI can only access channels and DMs your account has permission to read. Try narrowing the search: "Search the #[channel-name] channel for messages about [topic]".

SoterAI says it can't access a private channel

Private channel access depends on whether your Slack account is a member. If you joined the channel after connecting, try reconnecting your Slack account to refresh access.
